A. instead of是短语介词，主要有两个意思：
（1）表示”代替“，后跟名词或代词。例如：
*He will go instead of me. 他将代替我去。
*They use cotton instead of silk.他们用棉花代替丝。
（2）表示”而不“，后接动名词。例如：
*He went of going to the cinema,I'm going to the concert
tomorrow. 我明天去听音乐会，而不去看电影。
在下列句子中instead of 可以看成连接词，引导一个省略了的从句。
instead of +形容词，例如”
*The situation is better instead of worse. 形势更好了，而不是
更坏了。
instead of+副词,例如:
*You should be out instead of in. 你应当出去走走,不要呆在家里.
instead of + 介词短语,例如:
*We'll go there on foot instead of by bus.
B. instead 是副词，只表示“代替”“而是”，常放在句尾，如：
*He is tired, let me do it instead. 他累了，让我代作吧！
*If you are busy, you may come another day instead.如果你忙
就改日再来吧！
C. in place of 是“代替某人的位置”，“代替”的意思，如：
*Plastics can be used in place of wood. 塑料可以用来代替木材。
D. take the place of 是"代替","取代"的意思,如:
*Tractors took the place of horses in farming. 拖拉机在农业上
代替了马。
